Round 6 Reaction/Suggestion Post

Sorry I've taken so long to put up this post! We're looking for your feedback on how this round went and what you think should go differently next time. All these questions have ticky boxes so if you want you can check more than one answer, and in some cases it will probably make sense to.

We can't promise that the most popular choices will be implemented because, well, whoever's doing the primary modding for the next round will make their own decisions, but we still want to get an idea of what the community wants. (Anonymous posting comes to mind as something that might not continue because of the amount of work, even though it's popular.)

This can also be a place to talk about the experience of remixing or seeing your fic remixed, or to bring up other concerns that aren't addressed in the poll.

Poll #1422525 Round 6 Reaction Poll

Did you have fun?

Totally!
29(70.7%)
Yes.
10(24.4%)
It was okay.
0(0.0%)
Not really.
1(2.4%)

How was the 100-word rule for you?

Great! That's what a drabble is, after all. Every round should be just 100-word drabbles!
10(23.8%)
Nice for a change of pace. We should have a Drabble Purist Round again sometime, but not every time.
14(33.3%)
As a writer I much prefer the more flexible rules of previous rounds.
0(0.0%)
As a reader I'd rather some of the remixes were more substantial.
1(2.4%)
Ticky box!
1(2.4%)

What other variations of this challenge would you be interested in?

Go back to the plain old flexible rules, please!
6(14.6%)
Remixtheremix - write a remix of a fic that is itself a remix, for which I think we would need to get permissions from everybody.
1(2.4%)
Remixtheremix, for which I think permission from the author of the remix to be remixed is enough.
1(2.4%)
À la kamikazeremix - remixee specifies the fic you must mix.
2(4.9%)
À la fandom_mashup - combine elements of two or more fics from your remixee's archive into one remix.
1(2.4%)
All remixes to be written in verse form – sonnets and haiku and limericks, oh my!
1(2.4%)
I'll tell you about my other awesome ideas in comments!
1(2.4%)
Ticky box (extended radio buttons dub)
4(9.8%)

Was four weeks a good amount of time from assignment e-mails to the deadline?

Yes, it was just right.
21(52.5%)
Shorter would have been fine.
4(10.0%)
Longer would have been better.
1(2.5%)
Ticky.
4(10.0%)

What do you think of the sign-up requirements?

5 drabbles in a single fandom is a good minimum.
17(42.5%)
Copying RemixRedux, require remixees to have written in at least one of a list of qualifying fandoms (ones where multiple writers have signed up on previous rounds) to make matching and pinch-hitting easier.
1(2.5%)
Raise the minimum to 7 drabbles or higher to give remixers more options.
0(0.0%)
Lower the minimum to 3 – then more people can qualify in more fandoms!
8(20.0%)
Fics that have already been remixed should not count toward the minimum requirements.
1(2.5%)

The idea of spreading out the posts over six days was that it would give people more time to read and feedback without feeling overwhelmed by everything showing up at once. How did that work for you?

It was fun! Added suspense and anticipation!
12(29.3%)
It could have been stretched out longer too.
0(0.0%)
It didn't make a difference to me.
6(14.6%)
Too many posts made it harder to keep track of things (am I done or am I waiting for more of mine to be posted?) and harder to link.
4(9.8%)
I didn't like that some fics got to be up anonymously longer than others.
1(2.4%)
Ticky box (extended radio buttons dub)
3(7.3%)

What are your feelings about anonymity?

It's important to me. I'd be less likely to sign up if we didn't have it.
1(2.4%)
It's fun but not a big deal.
10(23.8%)
It doesn't make any difference to me.
3(7.1%)
I'd prefer if fics went up with author names from the beginning.
2(4.8%)
If we all posted our own fics we'd be able to do our own edits and there'd be less work for the mods.
0(0.0%)
I think we should keep anonymity but do our own posting with multiple sockpuppets like they do at RemixRedux.
0(0.0%)
If everybody posted their own fic the mods might not keep track of defaulters and the fics would go up with not everybody getting a remix, and that would suck.
0(0.0%)
Ticky.
0(0.0%)

What about reciprocity?

I like the option of being able to sign up as just a remixer or just a remixee.
5(12.2%)
I think non-reciprocity helps with matching, especially for smaller fandoms.
2(4.9%)
It doesn't make any difference to me.
1(2.4%)
I think there would be a stronger feeling of community (with less remixers defaulting and less remixees failing to thank their remixers) if it were a reciprocal exchange.
1(2.4%)
I think it was nice that people who wrote multiple remixes got multiple remixes written for them.
1(2.4%)
I think it would be better if remixes were more evenly distributed – for example, two remixes per remixee, regardless of how many remixes they're writing.
0(0.0%)
What?
0(0.0%)

Right now the fic headings list fandom; original fic author, title, and URL; remix author, title, pairing/characters, wordcount, rating, and any warnings (including canon spoilers) that the remix author feels are needed. What should we do about warnings?

Leave them up to the remix author, as they are now.
10(25.0%)
Mods should make a short list of common triggers (including non-con and child abuse) for which warnings are required, and leave other warnings up to authors.
11(27.5%)
There should be a longer list of elements that require warnings, including drug use and character death.
0(0.0%)
Remix authors should get the option of stating that they choose not to warn.
0(0.0%)
Remixes that don't need warnings should include a line that says "Warnings: none."
1(2.5%)
I have another solution that I'll explain in comments (but if I want to get into a debate I'll take it somewhere else).
0(0.0%)

What about fics that contain canon spoilers?

Leave it up to the remix author whether to warn for spoilers, depending on the customs of their fandom.
24(58.5%)
Require spoiler warnings for new canon from the last year.
10(24.4%)
Require warnings for major spoilers like character death with no statute of limitations.
0(0.0%)
I'll explain in comments.
1(2.4%)

What else should be added to the headers?

Nothing! They're good! (Come on, they're drabbles! We don't want the headings to get longer than the fics!)
28(71.8%)
Wordcount of the original fic.
5(12.8%)
Remix summary.
2(5.1%)
Author's notes, beta thanks.
2(5.1%)
Other.
0(0.0%)

If you're suggesting adding more content to the headers, maybe you could comment on a format that will look nice and be easy to copy and paste into the fic listing. We could also use more ideas about how to handle posting such a large number of fics as the comm continues to grow.
